Food, service and ambiance were all amazing. Came in for happy hour while visiting NYC, which was a great find and during convenient hours as well. Will definitely come back the next time I'm in the city.

Sake Bar Hagi is one of my favorite after-work places to grab a drink or a bite in this area! They have happy hour until 6:30 every day that has $7 highballs, beer, and other drinks. I always get their Mentai Pasta, which is a delicious and comforting spaghetti dish with a mentaiko (fish roe) cream sauce. I've also tried a number of other things: the fried tempura is crispy and tasty and the sushi is standard but good. I also absolutely love their Hagi Dream dessert which is a collaboration w Bibble and Sip (the Asian bakery next door). It's a black tea cake with mango and coconut mousse, and tastes absolutely amazing! For drinks they have some fun looking cocktails, but I like their highballs, especially when I add the yogurt or lychee flavor (for an extra $1). Service is attentive, but it can get busy especially with the after-work crowd, or if there is live music that day!

A small little joint in the west 40's, Sake Bar Hagi might not appear to be much at first glance. However, that could not be farther from the case. The unsuspecting setting reveals nothing of the taste of the food, which somehow blows me away every visit. Consistency is perhaps the most important aspect to a 'good' restaurant, and it has become increasingly rare, so it is that much more shocking and rewarding that the food gets better every time. Order Overview: This last visit, we ordered the yellowtail jalapeno roll that just melts in your mouth, the katuso tataki which has a great garlicky twist, the age tofu which is splendidly crunchy (a good one is tough to find), the shrimp tempura roll which is indescribably good and which is aided by the fresh warmth of the kitchen, the daikon mentai salad which isn't a necessity to get in coming here but I enjoy, and by far the best thing we ordered... the mentai pasta. Oh my heavens, I have tasted nothing like it. Seldom a mentaiko dish moves me to this extent, but Sake Bar Hagi is consistently special. Even though we ordered quite a bit, there was nothing that was even slightly dislikable. I was not disappointed once. Look, the service isn't perfect, but it's really not bad, and I think it's more than made up for by the sheer artistry displayed at Hagi, which, again, is so admirable... and the waiters are sooo nice. I find it very charming, with their swanky live music and dimmed lights. Spots like this are what keep NYC alive and well. Even if this was the most scary of locations, though, it wouldn't even matter. Everything else just melts away once you taste the food, some of the most distinctly Japanese stuff I've tasted in the city. Each bite takes you on its own delightful adventure, to a word where nothing matters but the unique flavours floating around in your mouth. And it doesn't break your bank either.

I recommend this spot, I chose it because I have quite a list of sensitivities so the extensive menu was a must. We (party of 4) went around happy hour and it was very lively. We didnt book a reservation but was seated immediately, the inside is very fun. The food was amazing, I got the tofu steak and ebi shumai. We also got drinks, the expresso martini was the best one Ive ever had but the frozen drinks were very strong and not great. Only thing is we asked for the extra flavoring in the drinks which the waiter must have not caught because they came out plain. Overall a great spot to just eat or start out your night, great location in Hells Kitchen.
